All Ah Wee! // Happy Juneteenth!
During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863. It declared that all enslaved persons in the Confederate States of America in rebellion and not in Union hands were to be freed. However, some states were excluded and many slaveowners refused to alert and free their slaves.
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas (over 2 years later!!), and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States.
Watch the video below to learn more and join me in celebrating Juneteeth!
Within this video, I also share my connections to this celebration and the hardships depicted in the film, The Harder They Come, starring the award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Caribbean Music Legend, Jimmy Cliff. I love the grittiness of this film and the light it sheds on the lengths impoverished people will go through to live out the life they envision for themselves.
In addition to this Jimmy Cliff's outstanding performance and music made this film an international hit!! You can learn more about Jimmy Cliff and his music by visiting, www.jimmycliff.com
Have a great day,
